Snow removal in Waynesville
Higher ground, more snow
Waynesville sits higher than Asheville, and the ground around it climbs well past the town. Balsam, the upper end of Maggie Valley and the ridges around Lake Junaluska catch more snow than the valley floor, and hold it longer. Most winters still bring more ice than snow in town, but a drive that climbs a long way off Richland Creek can be in a different winter at the top than at the bottom.
Freezing rain and refreeze are the everyday problem. The north side of a Haywood County ridge sees little winter sun, and a drive cut across it stays glazed for days. On a long climb, one glazed switchback is enough to stop a car halfway up, and the rest of the drive being clear does not help. That corner is where treatment goes first.
Who plows Haywood County roads
NCDOT handles US 23 and US 74, US 276 and the state-maintained roads through town and out in the county, and the Town of Waynesville handles the streets it maintains. The main routes come first. A drive that climbs from one of those roads, a gravel road shared by the cabins on a ridge, or a development's private road is the owners' to clear, or the road association's where there is one.
The plow on the state road often leaves a bank of snow across the mouth of a private drive, and on a drive that starts climbing straight off the road, that bank is where a car stalls. Clearing it is part of the visit. So is the turnaround at the top, because a car that cannot turn around at the house has to back down a glazed drive.
Long drives with switchbacks
Haywood County property runs to acreage, and the drives are long. One drive may serve a house, a barn and a cabin up the hill, with switchbacks where the slope is too steep to climb straight. McKinley builds and repairs drives like these, so he plows them knowing where the broad dips, the culverts and the ditch lines are under the snow. On gravel the blade rides high enough to leave the stone where it is.
Switchback corners get the most attention. Melt from the upper leg runs into the turn and freezes there overnight. Snow is pushed off the outside of the turn, downhill, and the inside is treated. Branch drives to a barn or a second cabin are plowed in the order the contract sets. The steep driveway snow plowing page explains how the climb and the corners are handled.
Rental cabins around Maggie Valley
Waynesville and Maggie Valley have a lot of rental cabins and second homes on steep ground, many of them empty during the week. A snow before a weekend leaves guests at the bottom of a drive they cannot climb, and an owner who may live far away. A seasonal contract settles that before winter: the drive, the parking pad and the steps are plowed and treated when it snows, with no one needing to call from the cabin.
Owners and property managers decide what is covered and what triggers a visit. A manager with cabins on several ridges can put them on one route. The contract can include treatment of the steep pitch ahead of a freeze, the walk to the door and the deck steps. It is all agreed in writing before the first storm, after McKinley has driven every drive on the list and seen each turnaround.
Lots in Waynesville, Hazelwood and Canton
In town the commercial work is smaller lots: shops and offices around Main Street, churches, and the businesses along the main roads out toward Hazelwood and Canton. Hazelwood was its own town until 1995, and its older streets are tight. Lots are plowed and stacked clear of the entrance and the drains. Walks, steps and ramps are treated, and piles are hauled out with the dump truck when a small lot runs out of room.
McKinley walks each property before the season and settles what is plowed, what is treated and when in a storm the visit comes. A lot contract and a home drive can sit on the same route. The estimate is free and given on site. The snow removal page covers the full range of work, and the Waynesville and Canton page lists the rest of what is done in Haywood County.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (828) 540-6856 and ask McKinley, or read the guides.
Does Haywood County plow private roads?
No. Counties in North Carolina do not maintain roads. NCDOT handles state-maintained roads and the towns handle the streets they maintain. A private drive or a gravel road shared by cabins on a ridge is the owners' to clear, or the road association's. Those roads are usually set up as one contract for everyone on them.
Can you plow a drive with switchbacks?
Yes. Switchbacks are plowed from the bottom up, with snow pushed off the outside of each turn and the inside treated, because that is where melt from the upper leg runs in and freezes. The turnaround at the top is cleared so a car can face down before leaving. McKinley drives the route before winter.
Can you keep my rental cabin open for guests?
That is what a seasonal contract does. The drive, the parking pad and the steps are listed, along with what triggers a visit and whether the steep pitch is treated ahead of a freeze. Plowing happens in a storm without anyone having to call. Managers can put several cabins on one route.
Do higher drives near Balsam and Maggie Valley get more snow?
Generally, yes. Higher ground holds snow longer and sees it more often than the valley floor around Waynesville. A drive at the top of a ridge can be white when Main Street is wet. The contract for a high drive usually allows for more visits and more treatment than one in town.
What does a Waynesville snow estimate cover?
McKinley drives or walks the whole route, looks at the steep pitches, the switchbacks, the culverts and where the snow can go, and asks what you want covered. You get one number for that, on site and free. Nothing is set until the contract says what is plowed, what is treated and when.
