Gravel Driveways in Brevard, NC

Gravel Driveways around Brevard

Brevard is the Transylvania County seat, at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest. The county holds the headwaters of the French Broad River, fed by its North, West, East and Middle Forks. It also carries the name Land of Waterfalls, with more than 250 falls along the Blue Ridge Escarpment.

All that falling water tells you what a driveway here is up against. Lots are wooded, slopes are steep and small streams cross routes that look dry in a drought. A drive that ignores them loses its surface.

We clear the route, cut it into the slope, pipe every crossing, build the base and crown the finish. Call McKinley at (828) 540-6856 to arrange a visit.

Gravel Driveways in Brevard: what to know

Wooded lots off US 64, US 276 and NC 280

Pisgah Forest, northeast of Brevard, sits where US 64, US 276 and NC 280 meet. NC 280 starts there and runs toward Mills River and Arden. Many drives in the county start on one of these roads and climb into woods.

A wooded route starts with clearing. Trees, stumps and root mat come out along the line of the drive, and the cut goes in on firm ground. See land clearing for that first step.

Stream crossings and culverts

Transylvania County is creek country. A drive that crosses a stream or a wet draw needs a pipe sized for storm flow, not for the trickle you see in August. The outlet needs stone so the water leaving the pipe does not cut a hole.

Crossings of a named stream can bring state or federal rules into play. Ask the county planning office, and the NCDOT District Engineer's office where the entrance meets a state road, before work starts. Our driveway culvert guide covers pipe choices.

Keeping a Brevard drive on the hill

On steep wooded ground the drive needs a crown, a ditch on the uphill side and dips that turn water off before it builds speed. The cut bank may need stone or a retaining wall. Our steep driveway guide explains how each part works.

Leaves, shade and a drive that stays damp

Under a full canopy a drive dries slowly and collects leaves every fall. Leaves pack into ditches and pipe inlets, and a blocked inlet sends the next storm over the drive. Build the inlets so they are easy to reach and clear them each autumn.

Shade also keeps the base wetter for longer. That is one more reason the base goes down in compacted layers, so a soft spell does not let tires push the stone into the soil.

Can you build a driveway that crosses a creek near Brevard?

Yes, with a culvert sized for storm flow and an armoured outlet. Some crossings need approval from other agencies, so ask the county planning office about your stream before work starts.

Do you build driveways near Pisgah Forest and Rosman?

Yes. We build across Transylvania County, including Pisgah Forest, Rosman, Cedar Mountain and the Lake Toxaway area. Each route is walked first.

Do you clear the trees for a new drive in Transylvania County?

Yes. Clearing the route is part of the same job, with stumps and root mat out where the drive will sit. The rest of the lot can stay as it is.

What should I send for a Brevard driveway estimate?

The address, a rough length, and photos of the steepest part and any stream or wet spot the route crosses. Then we walk it. Call (828) 540-6856.
