- WNC & Upstate SC
What you get
- New culverts under driveway crossings
- Existing culverts cleared or replaced
- Sized to the actual flow, not guessed
- Catch basins where the volume needs one
- Ditch lines cut and shaped to feed the culvert
- Riprap at outlets where the water runs fast
A mountain driveway fails because water runs down it or across it. A culvert carries that water under the drive instead. On the driveways we build around Asheville, the culvert goes in before a single load of finish stone.
We set culverts where the water already wants to cross, size them to the actual flow and shape the ditch line that feeds them. Where the volume calls for it, a catch basin collects the water first. Where the water comes out fast enough to cut, the outlet is armored with riprap.
Culvert work is part of our drainage service and part of the driveways we build and repair. It can also be done on its own, when an existing culvert needs clearing or replacing, or when a crossing never had one.

The signs
Signs a driveway needs a culvert
Water running across the drive when it rains. A washout in the same spot every spring. A ditch that fills and spills onto the driving surface. Ruts that come back after every regrade.
These are drainage problems, not gravel problems. Adding more stone to a drive that sheds water badly buys a few months. A drive that needs blading twice a year has a drainage problem, not a maintenance schedule. We find where the water is coming from first.
Mountain ground
Why it matters more around Asheville
Asheville sits in a bowl with everything around it going uphill. Water has a long way to run, and it picks the driving surface to run down.
East toward Black Mountain and Swannanoa the drives are long and steep and take a lot of water off the slope above them. South-west in Transylvania County there is more rain again, so drainage capacity is sized up to match.
Part of a bigger job
Culverts, drainage and the driveway
Culverts are one piece of drainage and erosion control, alongside French drains, catch basins and riprap. They are designed into every gravel driveway we build, and checked on every driveway repair.
We are based in Asheville and work across the rest of our service area. Estimates are free and on site.
What actually happens on site.
Trace the water
Uphill of the problem, not at it. Where it collects, how fast it moves and where it crosses the drive.
Locate before digging
Anything that breaks ground gets located through North Carolina 811 before it starts. There is a notice period, so it is worth allowing for on an urgent job.
Set the culvert
The crossing is opened up and the culvert is set where the water wants to go, then the drive is built back over it.
Shape the ditch line
The ditch is cut so water reaches the culvert instead of running down the driving surface.
Armor the outlet
Riprap goes in where the flow is quick enough to cut a channel, and the water is sent somewhere sensible.

How do I know if my driveway needs a culvert?
If water crosses the drive or runs down it when it rains, or the same spot washes out again and again, the water has nowhere to go. A culvert set where the water crosses carries it under the drive instead.
Can you clear or replace an existing culvert?
Yes. Existing culverts are cleared or replaced as part of driveway repair and drainage work, and the ditch line is re-cut so water reaches the culvert.
What size culvert do I need?
It depends on how much water reaches the crossing. We look uphill of the drive to see where the water collects and how fast it moves, then size the culvert to the actual flow.
Do you install culverts as part of a new driveway?
Yes. On a new drive the crown, the ditch line and the culverts go in before the finish stone. That is the part that decides whether the drive lasts.
