Driveway Repair in Asheville, NC

Driveway Repair around Asheville

A washed-out drive in the hills around Asheville is a water problem first. Rain lands on the slope above, finds the driveway and runs straight down it. The stone goes with it, and the next storm cuts the same channel a little deeper.

So a repair starts uphill of the damage. We look at where water enters the drive, how far it travels on the surface and where it leaves. Then we put the crown back, open or re-cut the ditch, clear or replace the pipe, and only then add stone.

Asheville sits where the Swannanoa River meets the French Broad, and most drives here climb out of one of those valleys or the coves that feed them. That means long runs of grade with nowhere for water to go but down. Call McKinley at (828) 540-6856 or send photos of the worst section with your request.

Local know-how

Driveway Repair in Asheville: what to know

Potholes, ruts and washboard: what each one means

Potholes form where water sits. A flat or dished surface holds a puddle, tires pound it, and the hole grows. Filling it with stone lasts until the next wet week. The fix is shape: cut the hole out, rebuild it with packed stone and restore the crown so rain runs off.

Ruts that run downhill are water channels. Washboard usually means loose surface stone with too little fine material to bind it. Each one tells us something different about the drive, which is why we look before we price.

Ditches, culverts and the water you cannot see

Most Asheville drives that keep washing out have a ditch problem. The uphill ditch has filled with silt and leaves, so water jumps onto the driving surface. Or a culvert under the drive is crushed, blocked or too small, and water goes over the top instead of through it.

We re-cut the ditch, set new pipe where the old one has failed and armour the outlet with stone so the water does not dig a hole where it leaves. More on pipe work is on our culvert installation page.

Helene damage, permits and who to call

Hurricane Helene in September 2024 damaged private roads, bridges and driveways across Buncombe County. If storm damage is part of your drive's story, Buncombe County's Helene recovery page lists the state Private Roads and Bridges program. Check its current status there before you plan around it.

Inside Asheville city limits the City of Asheville runs its own erosion control program. Outside them, Buncombe County runs it. Where a drive meets a state-maintained road, changes at the entrance go through the local NCDOT District Engineer's office. Confirm with the right office for your address before work starts.

Repair or rebuild

Many drives only need the shape put back. If the base is sound, regrading, re-crowning and a ditch are a fraction of a new build. If the base has washed away or was never there, a patch will not hold. Our guide to fixing a washed-out driveway walks through the difference, and gravel driveway installation covers a full rebuild.

Can you repair a washed-out driveway in Asheville without starting over?

Often, yes. If the base is still there, we restore the crown, fix the ditch and pipes and add stone where it has gone. A full rebuild is only needed where the base itself has washed out or was never built.

Why does my Asheville driveway wash out in the same place every storm?

Because the water reaches the drive at the same place every storm. Usually a ditch has filled in or a pipe has blocked upstream of the damage. Fixing that spot is what stops the repeat.

What gravel holds up on a driveway that keeps washing out?

Angular crushed stone with fines, such as ABC base, packs and locks together. Round stone rolls and moves. But no stone holds on a drive that carries water down its middle, so the shape and drainage come first.

Do you fix potholes in gravel driveways around Asheville?

Yes. We cut the pothole out to firm ground, refill it with compacted stone and regrade the surrounding surface so water no longer collects there.

What should I send to get a repair quote?

The address, photos of the worst washout, the steepest section and any pipe ends you can find. Then we come out and walk it. Call (828) 540-6856 or use the form.
