Driveway Repair in Black Mountain, NC

Driveway Repair around Black Mountain

Hurricane Helene hit Black Mountain hard in September 2024. The town was severely flooded, roads and bridges washed away, and power, water and sewer were out for days. Montreat and Swannanoa took heavy damage too.

Some private drives here still carry that storm. Some had a pipe crushed or buried. Some had ditches filled with debris, so every rain since has run down the surface. Others were patched in a hurry and are now washing out again around the patch.

We repair those drives in the right order. Water first, then base, then surface. Call McKinley at (828) 540-6856 or send photos of the damage through the form.

Driveway Repair in Black Mountain: what to know

What storm damage looks like on a mountain drive

Some damage is plain: a gully down the middle or a missing section at a creek crossing. Some is hidden. A pipe can be half full of silt and still look fine at the inlet. A drive edge can be undercut where water ran beside it, with the surface still intact on top.

We walk the whole drive and look at each crossing, ditch and edge before pricing. A hidden fault left in place is where the next washout starts.

Pipes and ditches first

The Swannanoa River runs east to west through town, and almost every drive here climbs away from it or from a creek feeding it. Those drives cross draws that carry real water in a storm. Each crossing needs a working pipe and an outlet that will not erode.

Where a pipe failed, we dig it out and reset it, sized for what the draw actually carries. The ditch above it is re-cut so water reaches the pipe instead of jumping onto the drive. More on that work is on our culvert installation page.

Fixing a rushed patch

After a storm, people fill holes with whatever stone they can get. That is a fair way to get a car back up the hill. But loose stone dropped into a gully, with the water still running the same way, washes out with the next heavy rain.

A lasting repair pulls out the loose fill, rebuilds the section on a compacted base and restores the crown and ditch around it. Our guide to fixing a washed-out driveway walks through each step.

Permits and the entrance

Buncombe County's erosion control program covers Black Mountain. If the repair reaches the entrance on a state-maintained road, the local NCDOT District Engineer's office handles that connection. Ask both before a larger repair starts. If the drive is beyond repair, see gravel driveway installation in Black Mountain.

Can you repair a Black Mountain driveway damaged by Hurricane Helene?

Yes. We reset failed pipes, clear and re-cut ditches, rebuild washed sections on a compacted base and restore the crown. If the base is gone along most of the drive, we tell you a rebuild is the better spend.

The pipe under my drive is buried in silt. Can it be saved?

Sometimes it can be dug out and cleared. If it is crushed, bent or too small for the flow, it gets replaced. Either way, the ditch feeding it and the outlet below get fixed at the same time.

Why is my patched driveway in Black Mountain washing out again?

Because the water still reaches the same spot. Loose stone in a gully does not change where water runs. The fix is turning the water off above the damage and rebuilding the section underneath.

Do you repair drives in Montreat and Ridgecrest?

Yes. We repair drives across the upper Swannanoa Valley, including Montreat, Ridgecrest and Swannanoa. Call (828) 540-6856 to arrange a visit.
