Snow Removal and Ice Treatment in Brevard, NC
Ice handled under the trees.
Brevard is the Transylvania County seat, at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest, and it is the wettest ground McKinley works. In winter that means more freezing rain than snow, on steep wooded drives that stay damp under the canopy. He plows and treats drives, shared creek-side roads, cabins and lots from Brevard out to Pisgah Forest, Rosman and Cedar Mountain.

Snow removal in Brevard
Wet ground, freezing rain
Brevard sits in a temperate rainforest, one of the wettest places in the country outside the Pacific Northwest, with rain pushed up the Blue Ridge all year. In winter a lot of that moisture arrives as freezing rain or a mix, not as a clean snow. The result is a glaze on every surface: the drive, the steps, the walk and the parking lot. Depth is rarely the problem here. Ice is.
The ground holds water too. A drive under a full canopy dries slowly, and the seep on the uphill bank keeps running in January. That water crosses the drive and freezes overnight, so the same strip is glazed every morning until it is treated. Higher up, toward Cedar Mountain and Lake Toxaway, there is more snow, and it stays longer.
Who plows Transylvania County roads
NCDOT handles US 64, US 276, NC 280 and the other state-maintained roads in the county, and the City of Brevard handles the streets it maintains in town. The main routes come first. A private drive, a gravel road shared by the houses up a hollow or along a creek, or a development's private road is the owners' or the association's to clear, and in a storm it waits until they arrange it.
Many Transylvania County homes sit on private roads that cross a creek or a wet draw on the way up. Those roads get plowed from the public road up, with each drive opened off them in the order the owners agree. The plow bank across the mouth of the road is cleared too, since on a climb that bank is where cars stall. One contract for the whole road keeps it simple.
Steep wooded drives and creek crossings
Lots here are wooded, slopes are steep and small streams cross drives that look dry in a drought. McKinley builds and repairs drives on that kind of ground the rest of the year, so he plows them knowing where the culverts, the dips and the ditch lines are under the snow. On gravel the blade rides high enough to leave the stone, which matters on a drive that already fights to keep its surface.
Snow is pushed off the downhill side and away from culvert inlets, so melt goes through the pipe and not over the drive. A culvert crossing is often the coldest spot on the drive, down in the draw and out of the sun, and it gets treated. The steep driveway snow plowing page explains how the climbs and the crossings are handled.
Cabins near Pisgah Forest
Around Pisgah Forest, Rosman and Lake Toxaway there are rental cabins and second homes on steep wooded lots, many of them empty for days at a time. A glaze before a weekend leaves guests at the bottom of a drive they cannot climb. A seasonal contract sets out the drive, the parking pad, the steps and the deck stairs, and what triggers a visit, so the work happens whether or not anyone is there to call.
Owners and property managers choose what is covered. Some want treatment on the steep pitch ahead of every freeze, because on this ground freezing rain is the usual threat. Some want plowing only for real snow. A manager with several cabins can put them on one route, and McKinley drives each one before winter so the route fits the roads.
Lots in Brevard: churches, offices, shops
In town, the commercial work is smaller lots: shops and offices downtown, churches, apartment parking and the businesses along the main roads toward Pisgah Forest. On wet ground the job is mostly treatment. Walks, steps, ramps and entrances get salt or ice treatment, the lanes are plowed when there is snow to plow, and the stacks are kept off the drains so melt can leave the lot instead of freezing in a corner.
When a small lot runs out of room, the dump truck hauls the piles out. The snow removal page covers the full range of work, and the Brevard service area page lists everything else McKinley does in Transylvania County. The estimate is free and given on site, after the property has been walked, with one number for what the contract covers.

Questions people ask
Not seeing yours? Call (828) 540-6856 and ask McKinley, or read the guides.
Do you treat ice when there is no snow to plow?
Yes, and in Brevard that is most of the work. Freezing rain leaves a glaze with nothing to plow, and treatment on the drive, the walks and the steps is what opens them. A contract can cover treatment on its own or with plowing, and you decide which surfaces are included.
Who plows the private road up to my house?
The owners on it, or whoever they hire. NCDOT handles state-maintained roads and the City of Brevard handles the streets it maintains. A private road up a hollow or along a creek is the owners' to clear. It is usually simplest as one contract for everyone on the road, with the cost split however they agree.
Why does the same spot on my drive freeze every morning?
Usually water. A seep on the uphill bank, or melt from a pile above the drive, runs across the surface in the afternoon and freezes overnight. Treating that strip helps, and so does stacking snow below the drive instead of above it. If the seep runs all year, it may be a drainage job for spring.
Can you plow a gravel drive without losing the stone?
Yes. The blade rides high enough to leave a thin packed layer, so it takes snow and leaves the gravel. That matters here, where wet ground already makes a drive work hard to keep its surface. McKinley builds and repairs gravel drives in Transylvania County and knows where the pipes and dips sit under the snow.
Do you cover cabins near Lake Toxaway and Cedar Mountain?
Yes. Cabins and second homes across Transylvania County can go on a seasonal contract, including the higher ground near Lake Toxaway and Cedar Mountain, which sees more snow than town. McKinley drives each drive before winter, and the contract sets what is cleared and treated and what triggers a visit.
