Gravel Driveways in Black Mountain, NC

Gravel Driveways around Black Mountain

Black Mountain sits at the southern end of the Black Mountain range, at about 2,300 feet. The Swannanoa River rises a few miles east at Swannanoa Gap on the crest of the Appalachians and runs west through town. Nearly every drive here climbs away from that river or one of the creeks feeding it.

Hurricane Helene showed what water does to that kind of ground. Black Mountain was severely flooded in September 2024, and roads and bridges were washed away. A new drive here has to be built to move water off it, not just to carry a car.

We cut the route into the hill, set pipe where it crosses a draw, build the base in lifts and crown the finish. Call McKinley at (828) 540-6856 to walk your route.

Local know-how

Gravel Driveways in Black Mountain: what to know

Building on the slopes above State Street

US 70, State Street, runs through the middle of town, and I-40 passes just south with exits 64 and 65. Off those roads the ground rises quickly toward Montreat to the north and up the sides of the valley. A drive that climbs that ground crosses draws that carry water every time it rains.

Each of those crossings needs a pipe sized for the flow and an outlet that will not erode. Miss one and the water crosses the surface instead. See culvert installation for how we set them.

Cut, not fill, on Swannanoa Valley ground

A drive piled onto a slope sits on loose fill and slides. A drive cut into the slope sits on firm ground, with bank on the uphill side and support below. The cut leaves a bank that may need stone or a retaining wall.

Our steep gravel driveway guide explains how grade, crown and water bars work together on a climb like this.

Permits in Black Mountain

Buncombe County's erosion control program covers the whole county outside the City of Asheville, so it covers Black Mountain. A drive that meets a state-maintained road needs its connection approved by the local NCDOT District Engineer's office. The town handles its own zoning. Check with each office before work starts.

Can a new gravel drive in Black Mountain stand up to storms like Helene?

No drive is storm-proof, but one built to move water does far better. That means pipes at each draw, a ditch on the uphill side, a crown and armoured outlets, so water crosses the drive in a pipe and not on the surface.

Do you build driveways near Montreat and Ridgecrest?

Yes. We build across the upper Swannanoa Valley, including the slopes toward Montreat and Ridgecrest. Each route is walked first, because the grade and the draws decide the build.

Who handles land disturbance for a lot in Black Mountain?

Buncombe County's erosion control program covers Black Mountain. Ask the county about your lot, and the town about zoning, before any clearing or grading starts.

What does a Black Mountain driveway quote depend on?

The length, how steep it is, how many draws it crosses, how much bank the cut leaves and how far stone has to be hauled. We measure on site and give one number. Call (828) 540-6856.

Should a Black Mountain drive be rebuilt after flood damage, or patched?

It depends on what is left. If the base is intact and only the surface and ditch are gone, a repair can hold. If the water undercut the base or took a pipe, the damaged section needs rebuilding, with drainage sized for what that storm showed.
