A gravel driveway in Spartanburg County fails in a different way from one in the mountains. Around Asheville, water runs down a steep drive and takes the stone with it. Here the ground is gentler and the usual failure is the stone sinking. Red clay goes soft when it is wet, tires push the gravel down into it, and before long the drive is two muddy tracks with a strip of stone between them.
So the work here is mostly about what goes under the surface. We take off the soft top layer, build a base of larger stone, compact it, and only then put the driving surface on. The finished drive is crowned, which means it is higher in the middle so rain runs to the sides.

The ground

Spartanburg County is Piedmont ground: rolling, not steep, with red clay close to the surface almost everywhere. Clay is strong when it is dry and weak when it is wet. A gravel drive spreads the weight of a vehicle over the clay and keeps most of the rain off it. Both of those depend on the base, which is why stone tipped straight onto the ground does not last here.
The gentle slopes bring a second problem. Water does not rush off a Spartanburg driveway the way it does off a mountain one. It sits. A flat drive with no crown holds puddles, the puddles soften the base and the potholes follow. A modest crown and a clear path for the water beside the drive prevent most of that.

Where the drive meets the road
Most new driveways need a pipe under them where they cross the roadside ditch. If the road is state-maintained, that entrance is inside SCDOT's right of way. A new driveway entrance there needs an SCDOT encroachment permit, and SCDOT has its own requirements for the pipe. If it is a county road, the county's roads department is the office to ask. Settle this before the stone is ordered. Rules change, so confirm with the local SCDOT office or Spartanburg County for your road.
A long private drive off a rural road, a short drive on a new subdivision lot and a second entrance to a shop or a barn are three different jobs. A drive that has to carry loaded concrete trucks during a build needs more base than one that carries two cars.

Build the base
Larger stone goes down first and is compacted. On clay, this layer is what carries the weight.
Surface, crown and compact
Smaller stone goes on top. It is shaped higher in the middle and rolled so it sheds water and packs tight.

How much does a gravel driveway cost in Spartanburg?
