Working in Travelers Rest
Travelers Rest calls itself the Gateway to the Foothills, and the ground agrees. The city sits about 10 miles north of Greenville and about 20 miles south of the North Carolina line, at roughly 1,100 feet. North of town the land rises toward the Blue Ridge.
That makes it familiar ground for us. US 25 runs north from here into the mountains toward Asheville, about 54 miles away. US 276 is Main Street and carries on toward Brevard. The drives and slopes up here look a lot like the ones we build around Asheville.
The town has grown fast. The census counted 4,576 people in 2010 and 7,788 in 2020. New houses are going onto wooded hillside lots and old farm ground. Those lots need clearing, a pad and a driveway that can handle a grade.
McKinley walks the ground with you and prices the job on site. Call (828) 540-6856 or send the form.
What we get called for
- Land clearing for hillside house lots
- Gravel driveways built for a grade
- Driveway repair and regrading
- Forestry mulching of overgrown acreage
- Building site preparation and house pads
- Culverts and drainage
Clearing foothill lots
A wooded lot around Travelers Rest is rarely flat. We clear the build area and the driveway route, and take stumps and root mat out where the house, the drive and any fill go. The rest of the slope stays covered as long as possible. Bare clay on a hill is where erosion starts. See land clearing for the method.
Acreage that only needs opening up is a mulching job. A forestry mulcher grinds the brush and saplings where they stand and leaves the roots holding the hillside. Our forestry mulching page explains what it can and cannot take.
Driveways on a grade
This is where our mountain habit pays off. On a slope, water runs down the drive unless something sends it off. We cut the drive into the hill rather than pile it on, shape a crown or a cross-slope, cut the ditch line and set culverts where water has to cross. Then the base and surface stone go on. See gravel driveway installation.
On the steepest lots, turns, water bars and a turnaround at the top matter as much as the stone. Read our steep gravel driveway guide before you settle on a route.
Who to ask before work starts
Inside city limits, ask the City of Travelers Rest about clearing and building on your lot. Outside them, Greenville County's Land Development Division reviews stormwater before a grading permit is issued. A new entrance onto a state road such as US 25 or US 276 goes through SCDOT. Confirm with each office for your parcel.
A rest stop from the start
The town began as a stop for travelers and livestock heading north. When the state funded a wagon road from Greenville into the mountains in 1794, Travelers Rest was the first well-equipped stop on it. Today the Swamp Rabbit Trail starts here, and Furman University was annexed into the city in 2018.
Travelers Rest is on the same run as Greenville. Jobs in Marietta, Slater and Berea go on the same trip.

Do you build gravel driveways on steep lots in Travelers Rest?
Yes. Driveways on grade are our main work around Asheville, and the foothill lots north of Greenville are the same kind of job. We plan the water first, then the stone.
Is Travelers Rest close to your base?
Yes. US 25 runs from Travelers Rest into the mountains toward Asheville, about 54 miles. It is a straight run for the crew and the equipment.
Can you mulch a wooded hillside near Travelers Rest without stripping it?
Yes. Forestry mulching grinds the brush and small trees in place and leaves the roots in the ground. The slope stays covered, and the trees you mark stay standing.
Who approves a new driveway entrance onto US 25 or US 276?
Both are state roads, so the entrance goes through SCDOT with an encroachment permit. Apply through SCDOT's online system and confirm the details with its county or district staff.
