Spartanburg County

Working in Landrum

Landrum sits just south of the North Carolina line in Spartanburg County. US 176 and SC 14 meet in town, just west of I-26. Exit 1 on I-26 is the SC 14 exit to Landrum, the first one in South Carolina. For a crew coming down from Asheville, it is the shortest trip we make in the state.

The town began in 1880, when the railroad was pushed north from Spartanburg. It was named for John Gill Landrum, who gave the land for the depot. The 2020 census counted 2,481 people. SC 14 starts here and runs south through Greer, Simpsonville and Fountain Inn to Laurens.

Landrum also sits higher than most of the Upstate, at about 1,024 feet. North and west of town the ground climbs onto the Blue Ridge Escarpment. The Nature Conservancy's Blue Wall Preserve, near Landrum, lies at the base of Hogback Mountain. On that side, property looks a lot like the mountain ground we work at home.

That is why Landrum work mixes both halves of what we do. Steep drives and drainage on the slopes, and clearing, mulching and pads on the gentler ground. McKinley prices each job on site. Call (828) 540-6856 or use the form.

Driveways on the slopes above town

A drive that climbs toward the escarpment fails the way a mountain drive fails. Rain runs down the driving surface and takes the stone with it. The fix is the same one we use around Asheville. Cut the drive into the hill, shape a ditch line on the uphill side, set culverts where water crosses, and build the base before the finish stone.

Our gravel driveways page covers the build. For a longer read on drives with real grade, see the steep gravel driveway guide. Where a cut bank will not stand on its own, a retaining wall holds it.

Clearing and mulching around Landrum

Away from the escarpment, toward Campobello and Gowensville, the ground is gentler and more open. Overgrown pasture and fence lines are mulching jobs. The growth is ground to chip where it stands, and the ground stays covered. A house site needs full clearing, with stumps and root mat out where the house and the drive go.

We mark what stays before anything is cut. More on the method on our land clearing page.

Permits and the road

Spartanburg County runs a land disturbance permit for grading and clearing work. Inside town limits, the City of Landrum is also worth a call. A new entrance on US 176, SC 14 or another state road goes through SCDOT. Check with each office before work starts, because the answer depends on the lot.

Landrum sits on the same side of the county as Inman, and Tryon and Columbus are just over the line in North Carolina.

Do you build gravel driveways in Landrum, SC?

Yes. We build new gravel drives and repair old ones in and around Landrum. On the slopes above town, the drive is cut into the grade with a ditch line and culverts before the finish stone goes on.

My drive toward Hogback Mountain washes out every spring. What fixes it?

Usually drainage, not more gravel. Water is running down the drive instead of off it. We restore the crown, cut the ditch line, add culverts where water crosses and rebuild the base where it has gone.

How far is Landrum from your base in Asheville?

It is the closest South Carolina town to us, at the first I-26 exit over the state line. Landrum jobs are an easy run down the interstate.

Do you clear pasture and fence lines around Landrum and Campobello?

Yes. Overgrown pasture and fence lines are forestry mulching jobs. The brush is ground to chip in place, with no burn pile and no haul-off.
