Gravel Driveways in Fletcher, NC

Gravel Driveways around Fletcher

Fletcher is a Henderson County town on the county's northern edge, bordering Asheville. It was incorporated in 1989. US 25, Hendersonville Road, runs through the middle, and I-26 crosses the western side with exits 40 and 44.

The ground around Fletcher changes fast. Near the creeks it is low and can stay wet. On the hillside lots around town it climbs. A low lot needs base to stay out of the mud. A hillside lot needs a cut and a ditch to stay on the hill.

We build both, and the same crew does the route, the drainage, the base and the finish. Call McKinley at (828) 540-6856.

Local know-how

Gravel Driveways in Fletcher: what to know

Low ground: keeping the stone out of the mud

On flat, wet ground the failure is sinking, not washing. Tires push stone into soft soil and the drive turns into two muddy tracks. The fix is under the surface: strip the soft top layer, build a base of larger stone and compact it before the finish goes on.

A small crown still matters on flat ground. Without one, rain sits on the drive and softens the base. See gravel types for NC driveways for which stone goes in which layer.

Hillside drives around Fletcher

Where a Fletcher lot sits on a slope, the drive climbs. Those need the mountain method: cut into the slope, a ditch on the uphill side, a pipe where water crosses and a crown on the finish. Our steep driveway guide explains why each one matters.

Permits for a Fletcher driveway

Henderson County runs the erosion control program for the Town of Fletcher as well as the unincorporated county. A new connection to a state-maintained road, such as US 25, goes through the local NCDOT District Engineer's office. The town handles its own zoning. Check with each office before work starts.

If an older drive just needs its shape back, driveway repair and grading may be all it takes.

Building alongside a new house

On a lot that is still being built, the drive goes in early as a based access road. Loaded concrete and delivery trucks use it during the build, and the finish stone goes on once they are done. That keeps the heavy traffic from ruining a new surface.

We work to the builder's schedule, and the same crew can handle the pad and the clearing. See building site preparation for that side of the work.

Why does my gravel driveway in Fletcher turn to mud?

Usually the stone was laid on soft ground with no base, or the drive has no crown and rain sits on it. Both let the soil underneath go soft and swallow the stone. A compacted base and a crown fix it.

Who handles erosion control for a lot in Fletcher?

Henderson County runs the erosion control program for the Town of Fletcher. Ask the county about land disturbance and the town about zoning before work starts.

Do you build parking pads and turnarounds with the driveway?

Yes. A turnaround or parking pad is built the same way as the drive, on a compacted base with finish stone on top, and it is priced in the same job.

Do you build driveways in Mills River and Arden as well?

Yes. We build across the area around Fletcher, including Mills River, Arden, Hoopers Creek and Mountain Home. Call (828) 540-6856 for a visit.
