Gravel Driveways in Greenville, SC

Gravel Driveways around Greenville

Driveways are the work we lead with. Around Asheville we build them on steep mountain ground, and that is the habit we bring to Greenville. Water is what breaks a gravel drive, so we plan where the water goes before we plan the stone.

Greenville sits in the foothills, and the county is a run of small hills. A new drive here usually climbs or drops to the house. It crosses a roadside ditch at the entrance, and it often crosses a low spot or a wet-weather draw on the way in. Each of those is where a badly built drive fails first.

Under the surface is red Piedmont clay. Clay is firm when it is dry and soft when it is wet. Stone tipped straight onto it gets pushed down into it, and the drive turns into two muddy tracks. A base of larger stone, compacted before the surface goes on, is what carries the weight.

We come down from Asheville to the Upstate regularly. McKinley measures the drive, prices it on site and is on the job. Call (828) 540-6856 or send the form.

Gravel Driveways in Greenville: what to know

How we build a gravel driveway in Greenville

We walk the route with you first. Where does the water come from, and where does it cross? Where will a delivery truck or a concrete truck need to turn? Then the route is cleared and the soft topsoil and roots come off, so the base sits on firm ground.

Culverts go in where water has to pass under the drive, and the ditch lines are shaped to feed them. The base stone goes down and is compacted. The surface stone goes on top and is shaped higher in the middle, so rain runs to the edges and not down the wheel tracks. Our main gravel driveway page covers the method on steep ground, and what to put down before a gravel driveway explains the base.

The pipe at the road

Most new driveways cross a roadside ditch, and that crossing is the part with rules. On a county-maintained road, Greenville County Public Works handles the driveway pipe for a new house, and it asks for a building permit or a mobile home permit first. The county does not supply a pipe to vacant land. There, the owner can get an encroachment permit and install the pipe at their own expense.

If the road is state-maintained, the entrance is inside SCDOT's right of way. Work there needs an SCDOT encroachment permit, applied for online through SCDOT's EPPS system, and SCDOT encourages a meeting with its county or district staff first. Settle the entrance before the stone is ordered. Our Upstate SC driveway permit guide covers the steps, and you should confirm with the office for your road.

What moves the price

Length and width come first. Then how much soft ground comes off, how much base the clay needs, how many crossings need a pipe and how far the stone is hauled. A drive that must carry loaded concrete trucks during a build needs more base than one that carries two cars.

We measure on site and give you a number for the whole drive, entrance to turnaround. For the full list, read what moves gravel driveway cost in Upstate SC.

Do you install gravel driveways in Greenville County outside the city?

Yes. We build drives inside the city and out in the county, on lots and acreage where the house sits back from the road. We build the full drive, from the pipe at the entrance to the turnaround at the house.

Who supplies the driveway pipe on a Greenville County road?

For a new house on a county-maintained road, Greenville County Public Works handles it once you have a building or mobile home permit. On vacant land, the owner gets an encroachment permit and installs it. On a state road, the entrance goes through SCDOT. Confirm with the office for your road.

Can I put in a gravel drive to farm land or a pasture gate in Greenville County?

Yes. Without a house permit, the county will not supply the pipe, but you can get an encroachment permit and have it installed. We build the crossing and the drive behind it once the permit is in hand.

Why does a new gravel drive on Greenville clay need a base?

Wet clay goes soft, and tires push loose stone down into it. A compacted base of larger stone spreads the weight and keeps the surface on top. Without it the drive ruts within a season or two.

Will the driveway be ready for a concrete truck during the build?

That is how we build it on a new house lot. Tell us at the estimate, and the base and turnaround are sized for the trucks that will use it while the house goes up.
