Driveway Repair in Brevard, NC

Driveway Repair around Brevard

Brevard sits in a temperate rainforest. Rain falls all year as air is pushed up the Blue Ridge, and the town is one of the wettest in the country outside the Pacific Northwest. That is the wettest ground we work, and it shows in the driveways.

A drive that would hold for years in a drier valley washes here. Pipes that were sized by eye overflow. Ditches that look big enough fill and spill. The surface stays damp under the trees, and soft base lets tires push the stone into the mud.

Repairs here are drainage repairs first. We size pipes up, line ditches where the water runs fast, and rebuild soft sections from the base. Call McKinley at (828) 540-6856.

Driveway Repair in Brevard: what to know

Why Brevard drives wash when others hold

The problem is volume. More rain, more often, on steep wooded ground means more water reaching each pipe and ditch. A crossing that copes with an ordinary storm overflows in a big one, and the overflow runs down the drive.

So a repair here is sized for heavy storms, not average ones. Pipes go up a size where the old one overtopped. Outlets get stone so the faster flow does not dig a hole. See culvert installation for how we set them.

Turning water off a wooded drive

The N.C. Forest Service's guidance for woods roads uses broad-based dips and water bars to move water off a road surface before it builds speed. The same idea works on a long gravel drive. A shallow, drivable dip angled across the surface sends water to the side at set points.

Many older drives never had them. Adding dips during a repair is often the simplest way to stop a drive from gullying again.

Soft spots and muddy stretches

Under a full canopy a drive dries slowly. Where the base was thin or laid straight on soil, those sections stay soft and rut every wet spell. More stone on top just sinks.

The fix is to dig out the soft material, put down a base of larger stone, compact it and rebuild the surface with a crown. Our guide to fixing a muddy driveway goes through the options.

Who to ask before a big repair

Brevard sits at the entrance to Pisgah National Forest, and streams cross many drives in the county. Work near a named stream can bring in other agencies. Ask Transylvania County's planning office before a large repair, and the local NCDOT District Engineer's office if the work reaches an entrance on a state road. Why does my Brevard driveway wash out more than drives elsewhere?

Brevard gets far more rain than most of the region. Pipes and ditches sized for a drier place overflow, and the overflow runs down the drive. Sizing the drainage up is usually the fix.

Can broad-based dips be added to an existing gravel drive?

Yes. A dip is cut at an angle across the drive, shaped so cars roll over it easily, and the outlet is lined with stone. It sends water off before it builds enough speed to cut.

My drive near Brevard stays soft under the trees. Will more gravel help?

Usually not on its own. Stone sinks into soft soil. The soft section has to be dug out and rebuilt on a compacted base of larger stone, with a crown so rain runs off.

Do you repair driveways around Pisgah Forest and Rosman?

Yes. We repair drives across Transylvania County, including Pisgah Forest, Rosman, Penrose and Cedar Mountain. Call (828) 540-6856 to set up a visit.
