Spartanburg County

Working in Pacolet

Pacolet is a small Spartanburg County town on the river it is named for. The 2020 census counted 2,274 people. SC 150 runs through it and meets US 176 and SC 9 in town, then carries on north-east to Gaffney. Central Pacolet, next door, is a separate town.

This is old mill country. Pacolet Manufacturing Company was formed in 1882 at Trough Shoals, and the town grew up around the mills. Pacolet Station and Pacolet Mills merged into today's town in 1997. Around that core is rural ground: wood lots, old fields and long frontage on country roads.

That mix shapes the work. Some owners want acreage opened back up. Others want a wooded lot cleared for a house. Both start with land clearing or forestry mulching, and most end with a drive and some grading. We do each of those.

We come down from Asheville and run across Spartanburg County regularly. McKinley prices the job on site and is there for the work. Call (828) 540-6856 or use the form.

The river and the 1903 flood

On June 6, 1903, a storm in the mountains north of Spartanburg sent the Pacolet River over the town. Mills No. 1 and No. 2 were swept away and No. 3 was badly damaged. The town rebuilt, but the lesson stands: this river can rise fast.

So if your land runs down toward the Pacolet or one of its creeks, find out where the flood zone is before planning a clearing, a pad or fill. Spartanburg County can tell you whether a lot is in a mapped flood area. Ground near the water is also where a mulched, covered surface does more good than bare soil.

Clearing and mulching around Pacolet

Pacolet soils are mainly Cecil, a deep red clay under a thin loamy top, with Bethlehem soils near the river. Cleared clay sheds rain fast, so we grade cleared ground as we go and leave it ready to drain. Where the ground only needs opening up, mulching keeps it covered instead. See our land clearing page for how each job is run.

Stumps and root mat come out where a house, a drive or fill will go. On the rest of a parcel, thinning and mulching usually make more sense. If you are working out a budget, start with what drives land clearing cost in Spartanburg County.

Drives, pads and the road

A lot of Pacolet land fronts a state road. A new entrance on SC 150, US 176 or SC 9 goes through SCDOT, and most need a pipe under the drive at the ditch. We build the drive on a stone base, set the culvert, and cut the pad to your plans.

Spartanburg County runs a land disturbance permit for lot grading and clearing work, including small jobs. Check with the county before work starts. For building lots across the county, see lot clearing in Spartanburg, or the Spartanburg service area page for everything else we do nearby.

Do you clear land in Pacolet, SC?

Yes. Pacolet is in Spartanburg County, which is part of our regular Upstate service area. We clear house lots and acreage and mulch ground that only needs opening up.

My land is near the Pacolet River. Can it be cleared?

Usually, but find out first whether it is in a mapped flood zone. Spartanburg County can tell you. Near the water, mulching often suits better than clearing to bare soil because it leaves the ground covered.

Do you work in Central Pacolet and toward Gaffney?

Yes. Central Pacolet, Glenn Springs and the ground along SC 150 toward Gaffney are all on the same trip.

Can you put in a driveway off SC 150?

Yes. The entrance on a state road goes through SCDOT, so check with them first. We then build the drive on a stone base and set a pipe where it crosses the ditch.
