Gravel Driveways in Mills River, NC

Gravel Driveways around Mills River

Mills River takes its name from the place where the Mills River meets the French Broad. It was long a farming community, known as the "fertile crescent", and it became a town in June 2003. NC 280 and NC 191 are its main roads.

That history shapes the driveways. Much of the valley floor is open, flat farm ground. Toward the west, the town sits minutes from Pisgah National Forest, and the ground rises into wooded slopes.

Flat ground and steep ground fail in different ways, so they get different builds. We build both, start to finish. Call McKinley at (828) 540-6856 or send the address through the form.

Local know-how

Gravel Driveways in Mills River: what to know

Keeping a drive out of bottomland mud

Soft farm soil is good for crops and poor under a car. Gravel laid straight onto it gets pushed down, and within a season the drive is two muddy tracks. On flat ground the risk is sinking, not washing.

So we strip the soft topsoil along the route, build a base of larger stone, and compact it in lifts before the finish goes on. A slight crown still matters, because rain that sits on a flat drive softens what is under it. Our guide to gravel types for NC driveways explains which stone goes where.

Wooded slopes toward Pisgah

On the western side the lots climb into woods. A drive there needs the mountain method: cut into the slope, a ditch on the uphill side, pipe where it crosses a draw, and a crown on the finish.

The cut can leave a bank that needs stone or a retaining wall. We lay out the route on site so the grade stays drivable for delivery trucks as well as cars.

Entrances on NC 280 and NC 191

Many Mills River drives connect to NC 280, NC 191 or another state-maintained road. That connection, and the pipe under it at the road ditch, goes through the local NCDOT District Engineer's office. Plan the entrance first, because the rest of the drive starts from it.

On erosion control, NCDEQ lists Henderson County's program as covering the unincorporated county, Hendersonville, Laurel Park, Fletcher and Flat Rock. Mills River is not on that list. Ask the Town of Mills River which office reviews land disturbance for your lot.

Drives for farms, barns and new homes

On larger tracts one drive often serves a house and outbuildings. We build the main stem heavier for the trucks that use it most and branch off to each building. On a new house lot, the based drive goes in early as the construction road, and the finish goes on after the heavy trucks are done.

Why do gravel drives on Mills River farm ground turn to mud?

Usually the stone was laid on soft soil with no base under it. Tires push it down and the soil comes up. Stripping the topsoil and building a compacted base of larger stone stops it.

Who reviews land disturbance for a driveway in Mills River?

Mills River is not on NCDEQ's list for Henderson County's erosion program. Ask the Town of Mills River which office reviews your lot, and the local NCDOT District Engineer's office about a connection to a state road.

Can one gravel drive serve my house and barn in Mills River?

Yes. The main stem is built heavier for the trucks that use it most, with branches to each building. The drainage is planned for the whole system before the first cut.

Do you build driveways near Etowah and Horse Shoe as well?

Yes. We build across northwest Henderson County, including Etowah, Horse Shoe and the areas toward Pisgah Forest. Call (828) 540-6856 to arrange a visit.
