The Upstate is heavy red clay. It does not carry a loaded truck on its own. So a driveway here is built up in courses on a base stone that locks together, and cleared ground is graded so the water has somewhere to go.
The ground is flatter than in the mountains. That changes the build but not the principle. The water still decides how long the work lasts.
