Concrete Removal and Slab Tear-Out in Greer, SC

Old slabs off new lots.

Greer added more people in 2025 than any other city in South Carolina, and the building that goes with it puts old concrete in the way: a farmhouse drive on a lot being split, a pad where a barn stood, a patio that no longer fits the plan. McKinley breaks it out, hauls it off and leaves the ground graded.

Concrete Removal in Greer

Growth on two county lines

Greer sits on the Greenville and Spartanburg county line, between I-85, the airport and the inland port. The growth that started with the BMW plant in the 1990s has not slowed. The city passed 50,000 people in 2025, and most of the new houses sit on what was farm land ten years ago.

Old farm concrete does not go away when the fields are sold. A lot buyer finds a slab from a packing shed or a milk house, a well pad, a footing line from a barn. Or a 1970s house on a big lot is being replaced, and the drive and the patio go with it.

The farmhouse drive and the new lot

The most common Greer call is a lot that used to be part of a farm. There is a drive and a slab on it, and neither lines up with the new house. McKinley breaks the old concrete out, including the thickened edge and any footing below grade, and hauls it off the lot.

Then he grades the ground to drain and leaves it ready for the builder, or builds the gravel drive himself. If the old house or barn is coming down too, that is one job: demolition first, concrete second, grading last.

Red clay and the hole it leaves

All of Greer is on Piedmont red clay. It drains well until it is compacted, and then it holds water like a bowl. A slab that has sat on it for forty years has a compacted layer underneath. If that layer is left and the hole is just filled, the fill floats on it after a rain.

So the base gets broken up or dug out, and the fill goes back in compacted lifts with a fall to it. On the flat lots that are most of Greer, that fall is what keeps the next thing dry, whether it is gravel, a pad or lawn.

Patios, walks and drainage

In the subdivisions built since 2000, the concrete is younger but the ground was graded fast, and a patio or a walk poured on fill sinks toward the house. Water collects against the slab, sits there in the clay and finds the crawlspace. A walk that was meant to carry you to the door ends up carrying the rain to the foundation instead.

Taking it out is often the start of a drainage fix: regrade the ground away from the foundation, or lay a French drain in the trench the slab left. McKinley does not pour concrete, so if you want a patio back, the ground is left compacted and graded for whoever does.

SC811 and the City of Greer

In South Carolina the locate request goes through SC811 before any digging. The state revised the law in 2026, and the center's site sets out the notice rules. A drive to an old farmhouse often has the water line under it, and newer subdivisions have irrigation and lighting lines that 811 does not mark. He probes before the bucket goes in.

Inside the city limits, permits run through the City of Greer's Building and Development Standards Department on East Poinsett Street. Outside them, it is Greenville County or Spartanburg County, depending on which side of the line the lot is on. A slab alone rarely needs a permit. A new drive onto a public road might, and the Upstate driveway permit guide covers that.

The number, and what moves it

McKinley looks at it in person. Thickness, steel, how close the truck can get and what goes back all move the price. Farm slabs tend to be thick and reinforced; a front walk is neither. A slab at the road is quicker than one behind a house. You get one figure with hauling and grading in it.

If the lot needs site preparation for a build after the concrete is gone, he prices the whole sequence at once. The tear-out, the grading and the pad are one number rather than three, and the estimate is free and on site.

What it includes

What that covers

  • Farm slabs and footings. Barn, shed and packing-house concrete out, below grade included.
  • Old driveways. Drives broken up and hauled so a new one can go where it belongs.
  • Patios and walks. Sunken slabs that send water at the house, out and regraded.
  • Steps and block. Stoops, steps and old block walls broken down and loaded.

Greer and the towns nearby

Greer sits between the two Upstate cities McKinley works. He does the same concrete removal in Spartanburg and across Greenville County, and Taylors, Duncan, Lyman, Travelers Rest and Simpsonville are on the same roads. In the mountains, Hendersonville is the next stop up I-26. The rest of the work he does in Greer, from clearing to drainage, is on the Greer page.

Questions about this work

Questions people ask

Do I need a permit to remove concrete in Greer?

The slab on its own usually does not need one. Inside the city, the office is the City of Greer's Building and Development Standards Department on East Poinsett Street. Outside the city limits it is Greenville County or Spartanburg County, depending on the side of the line. Ask before a new drive entrance or a new building.

Can you take out farm concrete on a lot I just bought?

Yes. Barn floors, packing-shed slabs and well pads are the usual finds, and they are often thicker and more reinforced than house concrete. McKinley breaks them out with the excavator, digs the footings from below grade, hauls the lot and grades the ground so the builder can start.

Will you pour a new patio where the old one was?

No. M&S does not pour concrete. The old patio comes out, the ground under it is compacted and graded away from the house, and it is left ready for a concrete contractor, a gravel pad or lawn. If water was the reason the patio failed, the drainage gets fixed first.

My lot has a Greer address but is in Spartanburg County. Who do I call about permits?

It depends on whether the lot is inside the city limits, not on the mailing address. Inside, it is the City of Greer. Outside, it is the county the lot sits in, Spartanburg or Greenville. If you are not sure, the city's Building and Development Standards office can tell you which.

What about the water line under the old drive?

SC811 marks the public utilities before digging, and the request goes in ahead of the job as the state law requires. The private line from the meter to the house is not marked, so he asks where it runs and probes for it before the bucket goes in. An old farmhouse drive very often has it underneath.
